The Ballad of the Green Berets

SSgt. Barry Sadler

Fighting soldiers from the sky.
Fearless men who jump and die.
Men who mean just what they say.
The brave men of The Green Beret.

Silver wings upon their chests.
These are men, America's best.
One hundred men we'll test today.
But only three win the The Green Beret.

Trained to live off nature's land.
Trained in combat, hand to hand.
Men who fight by night and day.
Courage take from The Green Beret.

Silver wings upon their chests.
These are men, America's best.
One hundred men we'll test today.
But only three win The Green Beret.

Back at home a young wife waits.
Her Green Beret has met his fate.
He has died for those oppressed.
Leaving her this last request.

Put silver wings on my son's chest.
Make him one of America's best.
He'll be a man they'll test one day.
Have him win The Green Beret.

1. Our group chose this song because we believe that this song shows what it takes and what it means to be a Green Beret. Also it connects to the time period well.
2. This songs message is that it takes heart and these brave men risk everything they have, even their life, for their country. It also shows that these men weren't afraid of combat and they did whatever they could to fight for their country.
3. The lyrics to this song express an opinion, it describes to listeners some of what the Green Beret have to go through and that they do what they must to survive and protect their country by maybe giving their lives in the process.
4. I think that a young person eligible to be drafted would think highly of this song because it shows the pride of these men and the courage that they have and young people could look up to those men as an inspiration for serving their country.
