One of the most well-known leaders of this movement was Martin Luther King Jr., had been influenced by Gandhi into never leading a violent protest. Violence, in King's eyes, was something that doesn't belong when looking for rights, and when a violent protest happened during a worker's protest in Memphis, Tennessee, he got very angry and wanted to call off the march. But when the protesters got started, they didn't want to stop, so King left, and a teenage boy ended up dead. King was devastated and horrified that people would turn to violence to prove a point. Another man who led through Gandhi's non violent footsteps was César Chavez. Native Americans also followed suit. See more on this in the Native American's and Worker's Rights Page.

Women also wanted rights in the United States. From Susan B. Anthony to Betty Friedan women have always wanted to be equal. See more on this on the Women's Rights Page.
