Truman was President for two terms, Democratic, served from 1945-1953. Truman was president during the Black Civil Rights time and he felt as though he should contribute towards civil rights. He sent Congress ways for Black people to get rights, such as: stop lynchings, ways to get Black men to vote, and to end segregation. He created a plan called "The Four Point Plan" which was a way to help counties that didn't have much and give them supplies that they need.
Dwight D. Eisenhower-
He was President for two terms, Republican, served from 1953-1961. People called him Ike. Towards the end of Ike's presidency the arms race began between the United States and the Soviet Union. He wanted to end the Korean War even if there was no winner. That is what happened, Ike pulled us out of the Korean War leaving it undecided who won. Korea ended up being divided in half close to the 38th parallel.
John F. Kennedy-
He was President for not even one term because he was assassinated, Democratic, served from 1961-1963. He was (supposedly) assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. There were many different theories on how Kennedy was assassinated such as, he was killed because people were afraid there were to many people breathing in the world and there wouldn't be enough for them. Or that Cubans were the ones to assassinate him because of the Missile Crisis (see Cuban Missile Crisis page). But Lee Harvey Oswald was still prosecuted for the assassination of JFK. He was best known for being a big part of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Lyndon B. Johnson-
He was President for one and a half terms, Democratic, served from 1963-1969. After Kennedy was shot, LBJ served the rest of Kennedy's term and then got reelected. His goals were big but he believed that he could complete them. They included: to clear poverty from the United States, elderly people having rights and being respected and cared for, Segregation ended and equality for all. He also wanted to see public schools improve and for children to get a good education. He also believed that disabled people should be treated just as well as others. Finally, he wanted health care to be offered to every citizen of the US. But LBJ lied to Americans when he said that American ships were attacked off the coast of Vietnam. We then went to war with Vietnam. Some of his hopes and dreams came true but in his time in office he couldn't complete everything he had hoped but he sure left a list for Richard Nixon to complete and some loose ends to tie up.
Richard Nixon-
He was President for one and a half terms, Republican, served from 1969-1974. After he got reelected for a second term he was caught being part of the Watergate scandal. Him and most of his advisers, during the time when Nixon was going for reelection, decided that they were going to spy on the Democrats running in the election. Most of the stuff that they did was illegal but Nixon was reelected because the public didn't know of them spying. Nixon didn't just spy on the other party, he also lied to American citizens. After being investigated by many federal investigators Congress finally built enough evidence to impeach Nixon. Though with the trial set Nixon resigned from presidency and never got the trial some say he deserved.
Gerald Ford-
He was President for half of a term, Republican, served from 1974-1977. He finished out Nixon's term as president after he resigned. One of the first things that Ford did as president was pardon all wrong doings done by Nixon in the time of his presidency. Some say that Nixon should have been tried but he never was. A mistake that Ford made was that he never pardoned any of Nixon's advisers that were prosecuted. That wasn't the only thing Ford did though, he successfully pulled the last troops from Vietnam which wrapped up another war in the United States.
James "Jimmy" Carter Jr.-
He was President for one term, Democratic, served from 1977-1981. Carter's presidency started off pretty bumpy when some Americans were captured by Iran for 444 days. He didn't do much in the country but he did improve foreign policy and he improved relations between countries in the Middle East. Jimmy Carter's main goal was to protect the environment while he was president. He completed the goal to the best of his abilities while in office.
Ronald Reagan-
He was President for two terms, Republican, served from 1981-1989. He was an actor for most of his life until be was elected president. While he was president he Signed a treaty with Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev to stop building nuclear weapons. He also told Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall. But Reagan also put to much money into the Armed Forces which increased the poverty in the United States.
George Herbert Walker Bush-
He was President for one term, Republican, served from 1989-1993. Bush promised Americans things that he didn't follow through on, such as telling Americans that he would lower taxes but he then ended up raising them and he sent troops into different countries when we needed help in the US with poverty. That made Americans think whether we should be spending money on other counties or putting it towards lowering the poverty level in our own country.
Bill Clinton was president from 1993-2001
William "Bill" Clinton-
He was President for two terms, Democratic, served from 1993-2001. Bill Clinton was a great president even though he did some "naughty" things. He was one of the most conservative presidents in our history. He also left us with financial surplus. But he still widened the gap between the middle class and the rich. He was accused of some wrong doings but nothing was ever proved. Overall he improved public relations and left office leaving plenty of money for the next president.
