Overview

The time period in book 10 in A History of Us takes place right after WWII and all the way up to 1999. After WWII, Joseph Stalin, the heroic dictator of Russia, refused to give back the newly freed countries in eastern Europe. He was amazing during the war, but was proving to be just like most other dictators after it. The Marshall Plan, authorized by the United States said that all countries in Europe were offered aid through money and supplies. 16 countries eagerly accepted the generous offer but some struggled to be freed as Russia was reluctant to let go of many countries. The Cuban Missile Crisis came about along side the Cold War. Soviet Russia gave its missiles to Cuba, which is an island, not far off the coast of Florida, and they stored their missiles there. The United States was shocked that the missiles were so close to them, and the missiles were pointed towards our country. The "crisis" part of this was the 14 days in 1962 that the US though it could be blown up any second. Read more about this in the Cuban Missile Crisis page.

During the Cold War comes the Korean War, a war which we fought to prevent communism from spreading to Korea. The battles there were hard fought and no clear victor ever emerged but the United Nations had proven a point. They were willing to fight the spread of communism. Cultures of the United States throughout the decades is very interesting, since it was always changing. Slang was cool one day, and out of style the next, and the same with clothes and music, too. Learn more about the cultures from the 1950's to the 1990's here.

Ever since the Europeans came to the United States, the Native Americans have been oppressed and cheated. The 1950's up to today have been no different. The Native Americans were still struggling for land and rights, and same with workers for the rights part. Worker's rights leader, César Chávez was a very important person in this time, using Gandhi's methods of changing things to help make the United States a better place for workers. After years of segregation, African-Americans finally started calling for their rights to be seen as equal by the government and society. This triggered many racially charged incidents, such as murders, beatings, and arson. Racial Injustice was everywhere, in culture, in law, and inside of people, and that had to stop. The Vietnam War was a not a well liked or supported war. It was protested against almost the entire time it went on. It started when Vietnam wanted to overthrow the French because they were practicing imperialism, and Vietnam wanted to be free. Read more about this on the Vietnam War page.

The Space Race was basically a competition that the United States and the Soviet Union had to see who could make the most and furthest advancements in space first. It was almost like a Cold War in space. Learn more here.

During the Civil Rights movement, the Second Wave of Feminism rolled around. Women were tired of being pushed around and discriminated against, and they were ready to march for equality and rights. Some of the main opposition were also women. Find out more on the Women's Rights page.
